Demolition of the northwest stair tower and elevator shaft revealed just how tough the ladies room could be. That left only one corner of the once-massive structure. “Somebody put a Skyway next to the southwest corner–that’s why we took our time with that,” explains Healy. That corner just got smaller and smaller, torn down conventionally with the heavy equipment. At one point, the Sabres’ logo in the team’s old weight room was visible from The Auditorium Station of the Metro Rail. The Sabres’ locker room was simply buried in the rubble. It was almost impossible to determine the moment when The Aud was completely down. There was no crowd for that, no fanfare, no photos. Actually the sub-basement from The Aud remains to be used by whatever new building is ultimately built on the land. It may not be visible, but it means that The Aud will never really be completely gone. 7 SUZANNE K. TAYLOR 2
