Perhaps you remember. • Lynyrd Skynyrd, in 1976, with the J. Geils Band as the opener, featuring Harvey & Corky’s costume contest and lasting until after 1:00 a.m. • The KISS concert in 1976, opened by Uriah Heep and closed with three encores, featuring explosives that emphasized the “thundering echo” of The Aud’s acoustics. • The Who concert in 1975, featuring Toots and the Maytals as the opening Reggae act, which led The Buffalo News to describe the band members as “clearly defined. (Roger) Daltry, fringe on his vest f lying, is a classic rock idol. (Pete) Townshend, a Meher Baba medal around his neck, looks like a saint. (Keith) Moon is a loony in white mechanic’s coveralls. Bassist John Entwistle is an eccentric baron in black.” • The YES concert, in the round. “They didn’t have the stage at just one end; it was in the middle, and it was revolving,” remembers Gary Steczewski. “One of my favorite songs was Roundabout and when they played that, everyone went crazy.” • Aerosmith, in July, 1976. The News described Steve Tyler as “a pouting, mike-stand-pumping dandy of a singer in the Mick Jagger genre.” LAUREN DEWEY COLLECTION 3 0 |
